Kouture Squad: Grow, Lead, & Inspire with Braea Tilford
Name: Braea Tilford
Hometown/Current place of residence: Louisville, KY
Occupation/Business: Blogger, Founder & CEO of Grow Lead Inspire
(Leadership Conference for girls)
A little while ago I mentioned wanting to highlight women from my hometown who owned businesses, were moving up in their careers, had good vibes, and were just all around girl bosses. I compiled a list of young women I wanted to highlight and finally got around to contacting a few of them so I now want to introduce to you the Kouture Squad. Twice a month I would like to highlight women who will inspire you, women who support other women, real women doing real things. If that describes you then you too can be apart of the Kouture Sqaud.
To kick things off I want to introduce to you guys Braea Tilford. Blogger, Founder/CEO of Grow Lead Inspire and all around girl boss. Keep reading to find out what inspired her to start blogging, what Grow Lead Inspire is all about, her fashion inspiration (her style is bomb you guys), and what's her go to order at Starbucks because what's a girl boss without her Starucks, right?
What made you create Braea.com? What's the back story behind your site & when did it launch?
It was after taking an internship with Ebony Magazine's Style and Beauty department that I officially decided to begin blogging. I'd been asked by a lot of people to create a blog/vlog for quite some time, and the thought of it felt very organic and fitting. I launched Braea.com in September 2015 and the growth of it has been amazing in such short time.
You always look so put together and on trend. How would you describe your style?
Thank you! I'd say it's very sophisticated and feminine. I love a good balance of classic and trendy.
Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
BCBG MaxAzria is my #1 love. I also shop a ton at Free People/Urban Outfitters and Zara. That's probably all you will find in my closet now that I think about it. LOL
What are your go to, can't live without beauty products?
I'm a curly-haired girl so I can't live without my It's a 10 leave-in spray. I honestly just spray it and go most days (especially in summer). Some of my other favorites are my Clarisonic and Anastasia brow wiz. I'd probably die without them!
You recently introduced us to Grow Lead Inspire. Tell us a little about what that is and how it came to be.
GLI is a leadership conference specifically for teenage girls. I created it for girls of color in the state of Kentucky and we'll be hosting the first annual conference this summer, in Louisville! (the conference has passed. Head over to Braea.com to see highlights of the 2016 conference) I prayed for GLI for several years and God gifted me in a way that I will forever be grateful for. All of those tears and sleepless nights are certainly paying off!
How do you juggle school and creating/growing your brand(s) (blogging & GLI)?
I'm actually still trying to figure that out myself! lol I definitely get overwhelmed at times but I learned to always make time for myself and regroup every now and then. My friends and mentors keep me very grounded as well. I've accepted that I'm a crazy perfectionist and I work really hard at everything I do, so it's vital that I keep space for the occasional R&R.
Where do you see yourself and your brand in the next 5 years?
It's funny you ask this because I just recently made my 5 year plan. I simply hope to have grown spiritually and mentally. I really only wish to see both Braea.com and GLI continuing to flourish and innovating new ideas.
I notice that you enjoy traveling. What are some of your tips and tricks for young adults who want to travel but are on a tight budget?
Just go for it! Do what you can and learn to split the bill with friends!
Football or Basketball?
Ha! So this is truly kind of hard because I really enjoy the intimacy of basketball, but my boyfriend (Braea recently got engaged so he's now her fiance'! Aye!) is a football player so I feel obligated to say football.
Go to Starbucks order?
Grande Americano, add sugar-free hazelnut, 1 pump classic, and soy.
Favorite (top 3) celebrity styles and why?
Monica Rose (celeb stylist). She is me and I am her. I love every single look she puts out! In fact, she styles a lot of my favorite fashionistas. I'm also a big fan of Julie Sariñana and Aimee Song. They're both bloggers and both have very chic, effortless styles.
If you could give your 21 year old self one piece of advice what would it be?
Keep fighting and love yo self gurl!!
